The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the ALA (American Library Association) to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for young people.  Each year, one book is awarded the Newbery Medal and several books are awarded Newbery honors.www.ala.org/alsc/newbery.html  (Page down for links to related awards: Caldecott, Belpre, Coretta Scott King, among others.)
