As we face ever more international competition in the sciences and the challenges of global warming, we need our youth to focus even more. Ms. Aguilar is making sure that Cal will produce the practicing scientists and engineers America needs through the Science Olympiad program.
The Science Olympiad program is competition with other schools throughout the region and state that brings science to life, shows students how science works, and emphasizes problem solving aspects of science, as well as the understanding of science concepts. Students are placed in teams to foster cooperative learning strategies among students. Naturally, the competitive aspect makes science education more exciting, so more students will enroll in science courses and engage in other science activities like science reading, fairs, meetings and field trips.
The program also aims to attract more students particularly females and minorities to professional and technical careers in science, technology and science teaching.
