Science at Cal
The science program at Cal emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking and problem solving. The seventh grade curriculum focuses mainly on life science, while the eighth grade curriculum focuses on physical science. In both seventh and eight grade, students learn by doing laboratory activities in which they are required to ask questions, make hypotheses, gather data through observation and measurement, analyze their data with graphs or charts and draw conclusions.
In order to provide these experiences, the science department is well equipped with laboratory supplies including binocular and monocular microscopes, dissection kits and materials, triple-beam balances, a vast array of chemicals and much more. Recently added to our inventory is a set of nine laptop computers and various probes for making extremely accurate measurements of temperature, pH, force, motion and heart rate. The students use this equipment to learn by doing science, rather than just reading about it.
