The Poetry Jam
The Cal Poetry Jam occurs each April as a celebration of National Poetry Month. It coincides with the Holt curriculum’s “Painting With Words” unit and includes an ongoing enrichment program complete with after-school poetry workshops, a field trip to the Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam Finals in San Francisco, and student editorial positions on FORMICA: California Middle School’s Journal of Arts and Literature, now in its third volume It culminates in a performance by students reading from their own work to the accompaniment of music. This year’s show was a huge hit as Cal’s poets took to the stage at the Sacramento Theater Company.
Throughout this intensive poetry unit, students journey from writing to performing their own work in a supportive, encouraging environment. This year’s poetry jam set its audience on their feet with their hands in the air! A sense of joy in language and creativity is the ultimate goal of this project.
