Oedipus Rex
2006 brought something new to Cal, a summer play. In just six short weeks, the summer drama class put together a full production of Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex.” This classic play exposed students to ancient family dramas, archetypal relationships, the joy of improvisation, and the rudiments of stage craft.
The production featured the talents of young actors from many middle schools, as well as returning alumni who starred in the January production of “The Winter’s Tale.” Of particular note were the performances of H. Davis and S. Frinzell as Oedipus and Jocasta respectively. J. Kwan was also rather impressive as the chorus leader.
The play’s performance ended the 2006 summer session with a two performance bang. Hopefully these summer productions can become a new California Middle School tradition of excellence.
A big shot out to J. Vang for providing background music for the production.
