MESA
MESA (Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement) is an after school enrichment program at that provides students with challenging science and math activities, as well as high school and college counseling. The program exists in elementary schools through high schools all over California, and tries to encourage students from groups who are traditionally underrepresented in science and math to pursue careers in these fields.
Students in MESA have an opportunity to struggle with real world engineering problems, as they build water bottle rockets, solar powered cars, tetrahedral kites, contraptions that will allow eggs to survive a 3-story drop, and more. They also work on their problem solving skills in math by participating in math competitions with other students in Northern California.
For the last two years Cal students took first place in both the 7th and 8th grade divisions of the Capitol Center Math Competition, and this year they took first place in the three-person team event as well.
