Macbeth
The January 2004 production of Macbeth brought the bloody deeds of Shakespeare’s proleptic villain to the stage. From the gothic-inspired weird sisters to Ashley’s intense portrayal of Lady Macbeth, the Cal stage reverberated with the deep knell of fate tolling for the overvaultingly ambitious Macbeth. The thane’s words haunted the audience as John uttered the famous lines, “Man is but a poor player/ who struts and frets his hour upon the stage. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury/signifying nothing.
