A Trip with a Purpose
California Middle School’s students make an annual pilgrimage to the Yosemite Institute under the able guidance of Washington University-educated science teacher Ms. Watkins. During the trip, students hike through the Yosemite valley and learn about biology and ecology in the greatest classroom of all: nature itself. Through games and other hands-on activities, students gain a knowledge of forest ecology, Miwok Indian culture, glaciers, and geologic formations. Rigorous hikes with experienced outdoor educators with areas of expertise such as wildlife biology, geology, and atmospheric science guide students through challenges designed to strengthen both mind and body. Students leave the Yosemite Institute with a new passion for their environment and a fresh sense of how their studies at Cal can be applied in the world outside of the classroom.
Later, these inspired students spearhead recycling efforts throughout the school as well as fomenting environmental awareness.
